Exploring Tewkesbury

Got the chance to go walking with Steve last night...very nice to wander around the town and the Ham.

Sunday..the same as Saturday

Yukky start again to the day again on Sunday  so I decided to pull out of the walk and head over to Billingham  I caught the bus to Hexham, train to Newcastle and then train down to Billingham. Billingham is where my family lived and my eldest sister Jane is buried.

Getting to St Cuthbert's was tricky from the train but I got there.

St Cuthbert's is a saxon church that has been there since 850AD with various alterations. Dad was a curate there before they moved to London.

I had a good look over all the cemetery and couldn't find Jane's grave. I enlisted the help of a parishioner but the records were away being archived.

It was more upsetting than I expected. ..and did throw me a bit.

Visiting the old school

Isn't change great...except when it upsets your memories.

After my course today I walked into Tewkesbury, got changed and walked down to visit the school Louise and I taught in back in 1990.

It has all changed.

The original brick part of the school and hall is still up but now houses a preschool centre.

The rest of the school has been completely rebuilt on the playing fields and the new car park is up where Louise's class was.

Steve Fisher is just finishing a meeting and then I will get a guided tour.

Disappearing from the Blogosphere

I disappeared from the blog for a few days...sorry about that.

After the weather broke for a couple if days on Saturday and Sunday I just hid near the youth hostel.

Saturday was horrendous...and I was warned by the National Park staff not to go.  I decided to wait a couple of hours and pop down to Vindolanda a Roman town site.

The site was simply amazing and I ended up there for over 3 hours. It rained continually for the entire time and when I left Lake Vindolanda was covering most of the ruins.

By the time I got back to the hostel it was even worse so I cancelled the rest of the day.

Rain !

The day has dawned wet..with lots of rain and low cloud.
I am pleased I went to Housesteads last night..I will catch a bus there this morning and then walk onto Chesters Roman Fort.
I was going to visit Vindolanda outdoor museum this morning but it is too wet.
Having just a dodgy data connection makes it hard to check the weather forecast...I can't connect to metvuw.com. ..the data allows viber and a little FB but little else.

Heavier rain now and the hostel has just posted a storm warning for the next 12hrs...accompanied by lightening outside...time for another coffee....
